Curriculum

Curriculum

Beyond the subject content, skills, levels of subject competency, and core values, the central goal of our school curriculum is to inspire curiosity, enthusiasm, and a love of learning in our students; we seek to harness this student agency and have it guide and support our students through their entire time at BMS.

The Primary School curriculum is based on the Berlin Framework Curriculum (Berliner Rahmenlehrplan) and the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and its modern method of providing a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based program of learning.  The main subjects at Primary School are Math, German, and English. The acquisition of language plays a central role in our curriculum, as one important academic goal at BMS is bilingual learning. Our language program and teaching methods act as central tools in realizing this important goal. To this end, German and English are taught as main subjects and supported by our German as a Foreign Language and English as a Foreign Language programs. Language support in this form is managed by a team of in-house experts, who teach small groups or provide 1-1 sessions with students. Additional subjects in our Primary School are Art, Music, Theater, Physical Education, and Social Studies.

In addition to the subject content, a central focus of our teaching is the training of fundamental attributes such as solutions-based thinking, critical reflection, research, public speaking skills, teamwork, understanding multicultural contexts, listening, and authentic self-expression. These attributes continue to grow in critical importance as our society at large transforms and are therefore a necessary and pivotal part of our curriculum.

Our school program reflects our common values and educational philosophy, providing a foundation of instilling a strong sense of self and core values in our students.

Programme of Inquiry

Programme of Inquiry

Our students are actively involved in their own learning progress, made possible by a strong commitment to inquiry as the leading pedagogy for learning and a strong desire to build robust student agency. Our curriculum is organized around six transdisciplinary themes, designed around areas of knowledge which are of global significance for all students and are revisited each year with increasing complexity. These units of inquiry are substantial in-depth and may span 3 to 8 weeks and focusing on central questions as the guiding force of inquiry.  This methodology allows us to provide engaging, transformative, and meaningful learning to our students, who are able to make connections to prior knowledge, explore new ideas, investigate ways to address problems or shape new behaviors as a result of their learning. Our goal is to instill a sense of the HOW in learning so that our students may begin to actively embed this important skill along their journey of inquiry-driven learning.
