Advisory Program
A distinct feature of the BMS Secondary School is our pastoral care system. We recognize adolescence as a time when a sense of belonging is essential and emotional well-being is inextricably linked to academic success, so through our Advisory Program, each student is supported as an individual.
Across 6th, 7th and 8th Grade, each student is assigned to one Advisory group for the year. This group generally completes all classes together and is assigned a dedicated Advisor. The Advisor and Advisees meet every morning, providing daily regularity in what can otherwise be a busy and varied day for a student. In addition, two specific extended Advisory classes are held throughout the week. This allows the Advisors and Advisees to get to know each other outside of the academic program, and develop social skills. During this time, groups might complete a community service project, lead reading sessions with students in the pre-school or simply discuss and explore issues relevant to them.
A student’s Advisor is also the first point of contact for both families and subject teachers when it comes to any issues or celebrations related to the students in their group. By having one person invested in the well-being and general success of each student, behavioral problems can be identified early and achievements can be given their due recognition both of which held develop positive self-esteem.
Advisory groups have been proven to create stronger bonds between students and help them feel more connected to the school community. In the BMS Middle Secondary School, we aim to develop the whole student – academically, socially and emotionally – and create an environment of shared respect and investment in the future.
