As an enhancement to our Primary School math department, we have trained a selection of teachers in the international, award-winning First Steps in Mathematics program. This progressive program is based on individual development of mathematical understanding to identify, understand and cultivate each child's unique learning abilities. Each child's learning pace is closely monitored. Based upon the truism that children learn better when they understand what they are learning, First Steps helps teachers "identify and correct students' misconceptions about mathematics."

We have chosen this program to advance our methods of teaching math based on cutting-edge research of how students actually perceive notions such as numbers and measurements. When it comes to numbers, for example, students openly discuss and try out different ways to count and usually discover that there are more options than they thought.  This is an innovative and open-minded way to teach mathematics.
