Languages

As a school with two school languages, we continually research international trends to keep our language policies up to the latest standards. The Primary School aims to produce excellent communicators who understand and express themselves confidently in more than one language.

In grades 1 – 5, English language skills are developed which encourage children to think critically and creatively about what they read, hear or view. They learn to write and present their observations to the class in English. In speaking, we challenge students to be risk-takers. These oral skills are further developed during drama, which is taught as an eight-week block in grades one to four and integrated into the English class. Grade five has drama once a week for a semester, culminating in a large-scale drama project.

For students who are not native English speakers, we offer the support of an EAL (English as an Additional Language) teacher to help them achieve fluency.

Our German language program has the same standards of quality as the English program and follows the Berlin State curriculum. Our long-term goal is for all students to achieve the same level of skill in both English and German. We also offer an extensive DaF (Deutsch als Fremdsprache) program for students who need extra support to achieve this goal.
