Our School

The BMS is the oldest international school here in Berlin Mitte and the only IBO World School officially recognized by the IB Organization in the heart of Berlin. Founded in 2004, over the past 7 years the Berlin Metropolitan School has become firmly established in the field of international education in the city of Berlin and beyond. We are a member of the most important national and international education organizations and have been certified by the standard-setting international education boards. In addition, we have been recognized by the Senate for Education as a certified substitute school and our relationship with the relevant education authorities is marked by high levels of trust and respect.

The curriculum of the IB organization is the foundation for our work as the span of its spectrum goes beyond knowledge transfer alone. This program focuses on transmitting basic virtues along with skills and competences that are essential for the future of our students.

For us, the IBO’s international orientation and approach to education are the cornerstones of our mission as they symbolize our aspirations and attitude. The program ensures that the strengths and weaknesses of each student are recognized and individually taken into account while each student is simultaneously regarded in his or her entirety. This methodology of interdisciplinary, active, inquiry-based learning is a modern teaching approach as it picks up on the realities that students will face in the working world, integrates the students in the learning process, and trains their problem-solving ability. The learned material can be transferred into practice without a hitch and is therefore longer lasting and more sustainably maintained. The children learn how to learn and experience that learned material is meaningful and applicable.

In order to fulfill the local education requirements and to ensure coverage of the contents of the Berlin educational program, we have synchronized the international program of the IB Organization with the Berliner Rahmenlehrplan (Framework Curriculum).

The international orientation of our school is an elementary building block for us. As a place in which 40 different nationalities come together, we live and teach our students our principles of tolerance, acceptance and respect from the very beginning of their time at the school. Intercultural understanding is of great importance in a globalizing world, and as a result of their education at BMS, our students will have no problem working in international, multicultural teams and finding their places in a global society.

We fill this education program with life every day with the help of our internationally experienced, open-minded and dedicated team. Our goal is to inspire our students anew every day and to make learning a thoroughly positive experience for them. The joy of learning is the foundation that will allow them to turn into lifelong learners. We have a strong team of teachers who accompany the children on this journey, providing them with the necessary freedom to develop their interests while simultaneously providing boundaries and rules so that the children learn to work in teams and to recognize structures. We believe we have reached our educational goal if our students regard their time at BMS as an asset and know how to use the opportunities available to them to change the world for the better.

As an international school, it is important to us to have a strong international community that contributes its special cultural features to our school and our school culture. At the same time, it is also important to us to maintain the urban structure of our community, as this structure guarantees that our school remains linked to our district and is part of its social life. We are convinced that good education cannot and should not take place behind closed doors. We are an open school and we make use of our proximity to Berlin’s young, progressive art and cultural scene and of its role as the political center of Europe.
